HIGH WOLDS HERITAGE GROUP HITS THE JACKPOT!

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded a grant of £46,100 to the High Wolds Heritage Project. Thanks to this grant, several villages in the High Wolds will work together to collect, copy and archive heritage materials from this unique area.

The recently formed High Wolds Heritage Group, which currently meets in Thixendale Village Hall, invites people interested in their local history to contribute to the project which will begin with an exhibition in July.

Over the next four years the HWHG plans to explore and celebrate the Wolds heritage in several ways that will bring together adults and young people from the different rural communities. As well as exhibitions there will be publications, talks and workshops for adults and school children. An important dimension to the project will be oral history interviews to preserve experiences and memories of older generations in these fast changing times.

St Mary’s Church, Thixendale, will see an innovative approach to church tourism through the installation of a son et lumière. The latest sound and light technology will be used to help visitors enjoy and learn about the significant features of this lovely little church.

Pauline Foster said, “We are delighted that the HLF is supporting this project and that we have the money to buy all the digital equipment that we need, and to do lots of other things. It’s exciting to think how we are able to use present technology to bring the past into the future. All we need now is to extend an invitation to the High Wolds community to come and join us. There are exciting times ahead!”

Fiona Spiers, Head of HLF, Yorkshire and the Humber said, “The High Wolds Heritage Project will enable local communities to work together to ensure that their history is preserved for future generations. Memories, stories and reminiscences are a popular way of learning about the past and sharing these experiences with young people. This project will preserve and open up the unique heritage of the Yorkshire Wolds by bringing the stories to life, letting everyone get involved and share their past.”
